The Premier League is the most predicted competition on earth, and the most misread. Everybody has an opinion on every fixture, which is exactly why calling winners separates nobody. Ten people in a group of ten will have the same eight matches right most weekends.

Why the scoreline changes everything

Take a Saturday where Arsenal are at home to a promoted side. Nine of ten people say Arsenal win, and nine of ten are usually right. Nothing happens to the table.

Ask for the score and the same room splits. 1:0, 2:0, 3:0, 2:1 and 4:0 are all defensible, they cannot all be right, and the person who lands it takes real ground. The football knowledge was always there. The format was hiding it.

The fixtures that actually decide a season

Not the big six clashes. Those are hard for everyone, which means they are worth points but rarely decisive, because nobody in your league gets them either.

Seasons are decided on the fixtures the room disagrees about. A mid-table home game against a team in poor form. A side playing their third match in eight days. A derby where the table says one thing and the fixture says another. Those are the matches where being right is worth something, because being right is rare.

A useful habit: before you write anything, ask which matches your group will disagree about. Those are the ones to spend real thought on. The rest you will all get right or all get wrong together.

How the difficulty gets priced

A prediction game that pays the same for every match rewards caution. You get ten bankers a calendar month, and a banker doubles the match if you call it, wipes it if you miss. The temptation is to bank the obvious home win. The maths says otherwise: a doubled walkover is worth less than a doubled coin flip, because the multiplier applies to a bigger number.

The other trap is banking your own team. Everyone does it, almost nobody profits from it, and by April it is the most reliable running joke in any league.

Playing it with people you know

A public table of thousands is fine, but the Premier League is a conversation, and conversations need people you can name.
