How to win a football prediction league

Nobody wins a prediction league by being the best at football. The winner is usually the person who understood the scoring, took risk in the right places, and never missed a round. Here is what that looks like in practice.

1. Turn up every single round

This is the whole game and it is barely about prediction at all. A missed matchday is a zero, and a zero is worth more than any clever call you will make all season. Over thirty rounds the table sorts itself into people who played them all, people who missed two, and people who drifted off in November.

If you know you will be busy, fill the coupon in early. Predictions stay editable right up until each match locks five minutes before kickoff, so an early guess costs you nothing and protects you from forgetting.

2. Work out what the scoring actually pays

Every prediction game rewards something different, and most people never read the numbers. Ours pays 20 for the outcome, 10 for the goal difference, 10 for each team's goal count and 10 more for the full exact score, then multiplies the lot by the match's difficulty stamp. The whole breakdown is public.

Read that carefully and the strategy falls out of it. The outcome is a third of the base points, so never throw one away chasing an unlikely scoreline. But the multiplier means a good call on a hard match is worth two ordinary ones, which is where seasons are actually decided.

3. Spend your risk where it pays

Being right is not the same as gaining ground. If everyone in your league calls 1:1 and it finishes 1:1, you all move up together and the table is unchanged. You gained nothing by being right.

That is why our scoring adds a rarity bonus for an exact score few others picked. It is not there to encourage wild guessing. It is there so that the two or three matches a season where you genuinely know something pay you properly for backing yourself.

Brave on the matches you have a reason about. Boring everywhere else. A coupon full of 3:2s is not courage, it is throwing the round away.

4. Manage the banker like a budget

You get ten bankers a calendar month. A banker doubles your points on that match if it hits, and wipes them if it misses, so it is the sharpest tool in the game and the easiest to waste.

• Hit means outcome plus at least one team's goals. You do not need the full score, which makes a banker far more forgiving than people assume.
• Put it on conviction, not on the biggest name. A 1:0 you are sure of beats a 3:1 you like the sound of.
• A banker on a heavy stamp is worth double twice over. The multiplier applies first, then the banker doubles the result.
• Do not save them all for the end of the month. Unused bankers expire. Ten a month is a spending target, not a reserve.

5. Know whether you are chasing or protecting

These are opposite strategies and using the wrong one is the most common way to lose a lead.

Chasing. You need variance. Pick the results the leaders will not have, take the away wins, put your banker on something the field is avoiding. A round where everyone scores similarly is a wasted round for you.

Protecting. You want the round to be boring. Move with the crowd, take the safe scorelines, and let the field fail to gain on you. Copying the popular pick is a perfectly good tactic when you are ahead and the season is short.

Once a match locks you can see exactly how everyone called it, which tells you where you already differ from the people above you. That is the moment to decide which mode you are in.

6. Do not leave the free points

Bonus questions are flat points with no multiplier and no risk, and people skip them constantly. Over a season they are worth more than a good matchday. The total goals question doubles as the tiebreaker too, so answering it can decide a level finish in your favour.

The same goes for the Vault. One lone exact call on a match the field got wrong pays the whole rolling pot, and you cannot win it from a coupon you did not fill in.

7. Read your own record

Your profile keeps every prediction you have made and how it scored. Most people find a pattern within a couple of months: too generous with goals, allergic to away wins, systematically wrong about one particular club. Fixing a bias like that is worth more than any tip you will ever read.
